Rural Roots 04: “School Bus Adventures”

I can remember the bus stopping at our farm gates on a beautiful September morning, it was the first day of school.  I was scared to leave my Mom but also excited at the same time to board this yellow machine that was going to take me off to the Andrew School. However, when I saw the bus driver I was very grateful, he was a family friend Mr. Victor who became my guardian angel for the day. I got to sit in the first seat so I could talk to him as I clung onto my Barbie lunch Kit and thermos set (which I still have till this day).

Being 6 years old and seeing the bigger kids on the bus was very intimidating. Once I got into the groove of things I figured out how this whole bus thing worked and my confidence grew. There it was the Andrew School, with the bus arriving in front of it meant stepping into a new experience. Everyone piled off the bus, heading to the main doors of the school, however Mr. Victor helped us newbies go greet the grade one teacher. I will never forget that day, filled with anxiety and adventure but also the kindness of a family friend who made my first day of school a treasured experience.

Rural Roots 02: “Childhood Memories”

I must have been 6 years old when my Dad said to me, ” I am going to make you a skating rink.” I remember how excited I was, my own skating rink.Dad spent countless hours making the rink perfect. It was beautiful, the ice was smooth like butter, but the part that took my breath away was the perimeter, it was lined with hay bales. That’s right… it served a dual purpose to stop me as my speed increased and a place to rest my tired legs.

That season I spent every chance I had enjoying this amazing wonder. Till this day I always think back of the selfless act of my Dad, making the skating rink that made a memory of a lifetime for his little girl.

Rural Roots 01: “The Country is in my DNA”

Is it in your DNA to live in the country or is it a future goal to own a farm, acreage or equestrian operation.

For me personally, it’s in my DNA. I grew up on a farm in Andrew, Alberta and come from a long line of farmers, the “lovers” of the land. My land is 3 acres, with a home shop and lots of room for my gardens. It’s my safe haven, my peace and serenity, where memories are made and my tribe come to visit.

If you’re pursuing your future goal to own a farm or acreage, I encourage you to embrace the journey it will give you  more than you bargain for. Roots run deep with the place you live and does truly become part of your whole being.
